QUEBEC — A poll used by the Coalition Avenir Québec government to justify and sell its secularism legislation reveals a split along language lines over the ban on symbols, use of notwithstanding clause, and addition of a grandfather clause for existing workers.
And a leading Quebec pollster who examined the poll says the wording of some of the questions shows the government tried to steer the results for its own purposes.
“I expected some orientation but this is really stretching things,” said Jack Jedwab, president of the Association of Canadian Studies and a veteran analyst of public opinion.
